FAMILY FESTIVAL BOOMS WITH FUN -COOBER PEDY OPAL FESTIVAL

The South Australian Outback Opal mining town of Coober Pedy will celebrate its mining heritage with the annual Coober Pedy Opal Festival on Easter Saturday.

2,000 people are expected to attend the Festival participating in sporting, opal noodling and workshops. The town’s multicultural diversity will be a focus for the day’s events with ethnic music, dance and food. The day will start with a colourful street parade through the town.

Festival activities are held on the Oval complex near the entry to the town from the Stuart Highway. Visitors will be able to "noodle" (fossick) for opals, trying to find the elusive gem in mullock heaps of sandstone and opal potch brought from the minefields. Mine Rescue safety demonstrations, a backhoe competition, beer belly competition, tug of war between the miners and a "dump shovelling" competition will add to the mining atmosphere.

Sporting events, dancing, music and fireworks will add to the festival fun. On Sunday visitors can attend a combined Church Service at sunrise at the Big Winch, competitions, an Ambrose golf tournament and speedway action culminating in a demolition derby.

Regional Express Airlines and McCaffertey’s Greyhound Coaches service Coober Pedy which is 850km north of Adelaide and 680km south of Alice Springs on the sealed Stuart Highway. Coober Pedy offers a wide range of accommodation including underground and above-ground hotels and motels, backpackers, caravan and camping facilities.
